About Us
Our vision is to lower global carbon dioxide to 350 ppm, restore a safe climate at emergency speed, and further the cause of climate justice.
Our Vision
350 Yakima Climate Action is a local chapter of 350.org, an international movement of ordinary people working to end the age of fossil fuels and build a world of community-led renewable energy for all. We view our work through the lens of environmental, social, and economic justice. We understand the future is for everyone and that we must empower everyone to build that future together.
Our Mission
NAKNÚWIT TIICHÁM: what does it mean?
In the Ichiskíin or Sahaptin, the language historically used by members of the Yakama Nation, “Naknúwit tiichám” means “caring for the land.”
350 Yakima Climate Action strives to serve the communities of the Yakima Valley, which rests on the ancestral lands of the fourteen Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation. Our logo incorporates a tenet of climate justice in three languages: English, Spanish, and Ichiskíin.
Inspired by the youth-led global climate strikes in September 2019 and the speeches of Greta Thunberg, several community members in Yakima, Washington decided to hold their own climate strike on September 20, 2019. About 100 people gathered at Millenium Park and after listening to several local speakers, marched through the city ending at Performance Park with exhibitors, music and more speakers.
Inspired by the lack of a robust climate advocacy presence, four of the march organizers came together to form 350 Yakima Climate Action. With guidance from 350.org and coaching from 350 Seattle, 350 Yakima became a reality. We sincerely appreciate and thank those who lent their time and expertise to help us get on our feet.
