What We Do
We collaborate with communities at the frontline of the climate crisis, who have historically contributed the least emissions but are feeling the worst effects.
350 Yakima is a local branch of 350.org and is located in Yakima, a mid-sized city in Central Washington. We work on lobbying our state and local government leaders to adopt and strive for climate-friendly laws and regulations. We are a member of the statewide coalition of 350WA.org and collaborate to support and pass climate-friendly legislation and policies.
We work at the local, state, national, and global levels. Through direct action, legislative advocacy, lobbying political leaders, art, and education, we hope to build a community to achieve our goals. 350 Yakima’s volunteers advocate through peaceful demonstrations, writing Op-eds and Letters to the Editors at local news outlets, and educating the community about sustainable practices and legislation they can support. Our legislative priorities cover housing, transportation, energy, recycling, waste reduction, and police accountability.
Our Work
What We’ve Achieved
In 2019, we organized the youth-inspired global climate strike in downtown Yakima.
We collected signatures on a petition and resolution to declare a climate emergency and to establish a citizen’s climate advisory council.
Due to our efforts, on December 10, 2019, Mayor Coffey signed the first Climate Emergency Proclamation in the State of Washington.
We have demonstrated in front of Chase Bank to bring awareness to the climate emergency and Chase’s complicity. Many were surprised to learn their savings were being used to fund climate chaos.
In April 2020, we organized the Earth Day event which was held virtually due to the pandemic.
We picketed with the largest group of agricultural worker strikes in the Yakima Valley in decades, helping them win workplace protections during the pandemic.
350.org and 350 Yakima supported the Movement for Black Lives in local protests and advocacy efforts.
